3 Cards to Dead Time game

Hidden object genre games can sometimes be a little bit boring and contrived however the Three Cards franchise is a fresh and unique spin on the HOG games and how you play them. Three Cards to Dead Time revolves around a girl named Jess who may as well not have woke up that day; she has ghosts talking to her, the man responsible for her parents death is searching for her and her boyfriend has had it. Oh and to top it off she has started to suffer from intruding psychic visions and is at the center of an 80 year old mystery that may cost her life.

Three Cards to Dead Time is the second instalment in the series which introduced Jess and its spin on the genre has definitely been felt. The 3 Cards franchise uses a combination of item searching and wordplay to create a truly unique and fresh HOG game. The basic idea behind this game is that it would give you a word and then you would have to find a particular item.

This game picks up shortly after 3 Cards to Midnight, if not right after. It builds upon the previous game by using the same idea of wordplay and item searching. The biggest difference now though is that you do not have to have knowledge of a certain phrase just in order to be able to solve the game. The phrases are more intuitive and have better descriptions than in Midnight. This means the game play is a lot smoother than the first 3 cards game.

The structure of the game is rather nice and is broken down into chapters which have different locations that you are required to search. Each of these locations have between 2 and 3 different items that you will need to find; however be careful when you are selecting an item because if you choose incorrectly 9 times you will need to start the game over. For each item you find you will receive points that work towards earning you new hints; once you have hit 100 points you will have earned a hint.

Another major difference from other HOG's is that 3 Cards to Dead Time does not require you to find hidden objects, but rather match a particular object in application to one of the several different categories. While searching for different objects you will have many different puzzles that are both challenging and frustrating. The puzzles that they will give you will test your logic and skills of deduction while you try to make sorts of what Jess has found through her adventure. Each of the different puzzles have instructions however if you get stumped and just want to move on you may skip a puzzle which only will penalize your overall score. Once you have the nerve to try and take those puzzles on again you are able to do so by going back to replay puzzles that you have skipped.

With 3 Cards to Dead Time it is clearly evident that they cared about the game experience of users and put a great deal of effort into figuring out how to make the best possible HOG game, in terms of game play. However 3 Cards to Dead Time does not deliver the story in a manner that represents the effort put in behind the scenes. The voice talent used for different characters is for lack of a better word, awful. Also more time should have been spent on the overall design of the characters as they just do not look that realistic or even interesting.

3 Cards to Dead Time is a very good game if you can get over the front end of the game not being up to par. The unique spin on the HOG genre that 3 Cards presents us is very fun to play and will challenge you in a few different ways. If you are more interested in game play and a challenge 3 Cards to Dead Time is for you; however if you are someone who likes eye candy you should likely avoid this occult thriller. All and all it is worth trying out if you are a fan of HOG's and look for a challenge.
